Railing made of paperclips

Graz, 2011

Inspiration

I ´ve been inspired by strands of the flowing water. The problem was how to interpret the water railing.

Choice of material

I chose paper clips and nylon as a material for the infilling of the railing. I used paperclips of four different sizes: 20mm, 26mm, 30mm and 50mm. The structure of the railing are steel pipes.

Principle

I was trying to thread paperclips  to nylon in different ways and I came across one variation, which forms a helix due to the way of threading. A clockwise or counterclockwise helix is created.

Price

It was used 1440 paperclips and 3 nylon spools for the infilling of a length of 95 mm. The price of the material without the pipes structure was € 21.70.
